On April 28, 2007 AMVETS Riders Chapter 66 held our first sponsored event, a Poker Run from Post 66 in Covington to Medway, Vandalia, and Brookville,
returning back to Post 66. The day started very gloomy with cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 50’s. The post opened up at 8:00 am with Riders officers and support personnel present. Breakfast was provided at the canteen with Angie and Sandy cooking sausage and egg muffins. |
|
|
| Riders started showing after 9:00 with Ray Vaught, AMVETS Dept of Ohio 2nd Vice Commander, riding in all the way from Fairfield, 73 miles away. Darrell Robinson, AMVETS Riders State President, was also present. By 11 am the skies had cleared up nicely and the temperatures were now in the mid 60’s`. By that time we counted 87 motorcycles were in our lot! | |
|
After everyone was registered, we had a grand total of 112
participants. At 11 am we mustered everyone for a group photo and
Chaplain Paul gave invocation and blessed the bikes.
First bikes were out around 11:15 and headed for Medway, 34 miles away. While on Troy Pike we encountered a funeral procession coming from the opposite direction so everyone pulled to the shoulder to showed respect. We all arrived at Medway Post 148 shortly after Noon; Shelia Christian greeted everyone and handed out the next cards. After a brief rest, we headed 17 miles west to Vandalia. |
|
At Vandalia Post 99, Scott
& Diane Cromes greeted and handed out the next cards. Post 99 provided hamburgers and
hot dogs for all the hungry riders. After Lunch and another brief rest,
we were on our way to Brookville.
|
|
This leg of our trip took us through
residential Dayton on Westbrook Rd. Post 1789 in Brookville is a rustic log
cabin style structure, very impressive and well-cared for. At
Brookville, Bob Hicks and Stacy Ross greeted and handed out the next
cards. By now it was 3 PM and time to head for home.

The last leg of our run took us through Phillipsburg,
Laura, and rural Miami County, traveling up State Route 721 through
Bradford. It was now 4PM and Riders were beginning to arrive at
the final destination, 93 Miles and 5 hours after our start.
Covington’s Tony Dunlevy, Rick Harmon and Tommy Gaubeaux were cooking
hamburgers and hot dogs and members had brought in several great
covered dishes. Due to their thoughtfulness and generosity, there was
plenty of food for our hungry Riders. Our volunteers all did an excellent job of securing generous donations from local merchants who provided 75 door prizes, which were handed out by Jona Everly. |

By 5 PM the Post was a full house with lots of
celebrating both inside and out. Everybody was in high spirits.
Dan and Gayle Manson, who were responsible for the registration, handed
out the final poker hands with Lacy Dunlevy in charge of the raffle
prizes. The winning poker hand was held by Cheryl Gray with 4 sixes. Second place went to Greg Condra with a diamond flush, and in third place was Robert Shell with 3 Kings. The post remained jumping until well past midnight with an open jukebox and lots of partying. Even after the Post closed the Campers were still up and stayed past 1 AM with Guitars and lively singing. On behalf of all the AMVETS Riders, we would like to express our appreciation to all the participants, volunteers and sponsors who made this event a rip-roaring success. |
